Examples of some of our previous sessions:

Thursday 28th September 2006    Match Management - A referee is only as good as his last match. Chris White took us through the opening stages of his last game with the help of the match video. Showing how he used each first occurrence to ensure he controlled the game appropriately. He also demonstrated the differences in technique used to manage a youth match. Further information available here.

Thursday 23rd November 2006   Front Row Play - Former Bath and England prop John Mallett explained the coaches perspective on front row play, particularly the engage sequence and brought along two sets of forwards from Millfield School for a practical demonstration and a chance for a couple of Society referees to demonstrate the new sequence.

Thursday 25th January 2007    The Psychology of Refereeing - Mikel Mellick, a sports psychologist working with the RFU discussed how to recognise what factors contribute to the stress a referee faces and how to counteract these. Slides from this presentation will be available in the members area of this site soon. Please contact the webmaster if you don't have access or have forgotten your password.

Thursday 22nd March 2007    Line Out - Ex-Bath and England Lock Nigel 'Ollie' Redman presented a session highlighting the way he coaches the line-out including mental and physical preparation and answered questions from members including what he expects from the referee.

Thursday 27th September 2007    Management & The Maul - Martin Bath gave some useful tips on things to do pre-match, post-match and during the game. This is not only a useful guide for newer referees but also a handy reminder for more senior refs. Steve Harland, the RFU's Referee Development Manager for the South West gave a presentation and led a discussion on Mauling. This included some clarification of the law, particularly in respect of situations where defenders choose not to form a maul from a lineout or to leave a maul voluntarily. Both presentations are available from the links on the left.

Thursday 29th November 2007 - Clive Book, who coaches both Avon and Somerset led a session on the relationship between coaches and referees including what the coaches expect of a referee and the best approach to providing feedback. This was a useful session in that it reinforced some key messages such as the importance of effective communications and the value of the pre-match brief.

Thursday 24th January 2008 - World Cup referee Wayne Barnes talked about his preparation for the 2007 RWC and discussed some of the decisions he made about how he planned to referee during the competition. He also discussed some of the memorable events of the tournament and posed for photographs with some members of the Society who had come appropriately dressed (see photo).

Thursday 20th March 2008 - South West Referee Development Manager Steve Harland talked about Management of the Game at the lower levels. This was as popular as ever and Steve led a discussion on various aspects of the game including Player Management, Positioning and Referee Development.
